Now I've got a working heap, what do I do with my kitchen waste? I'm tempted to bury it right in the middle next time I turn it over, but I don't want to upset the system working. I also have another heap that I can stack stuff onto before I do another proper layered one...

How about making a runner bean trench?
I usually dig a trench around now and fill it with kitchen waste for a couple of months then cover with soil before planting beans out in May. _________________ Who says I have a short attention spa..........ooh look, a chicken!

There's cold composting and hot composting.
In hot composting you make a huge pile of compostable stuff all at once. It heats up and turns to compost quite quickly. It sounds like this is what you've got 'cooking' at the moment. I wouldn't add anything to it now.
I'd start a new pile and add to it until your first lot has cooked and can be spread on the garden.
I hope this makes sense!
The runner bean trench is a good idea too. |

Two heaps - one working well, one starting off. By the time you're using the working-well-now-one, the new one will take its place and so on ad inficompostnitum...................... _________________ unboughtdelicacies
